Registered Midwives (RMs), often referred to as Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) in the United States, are advanced healthcare professionals who specialize in pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum care, and women’s reproductive health. They provide medical care to women before, during, and after pregnancy while promoting safe and natural childbirth practices.
Midwives work closely with obstetricians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure the health and well-being of both mother and baby.
Provide prenatal care to pregnant women including physical examinations and health assessments
Monitor the health and development of the fetus during pregnancy
Assist and manage normal labor and childbirth
Provide postpartum care to mothers and newborn babies
Educate mothers and families on pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, and newborn care
Monitor and record patient medical history and vital signs
Identify pregnancy complications and refer patients to physicians when necessary
Provide family planning and reproductive health services
Administer medications and treatments as required
Support women emotionally
Education Requirements
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or a related healthcare degree
Completion of an accredited midwifery education program
Certification as a Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM)
Valid nursing or midwifery license in the state of employment
Experience
Clinical training in maternity and women’s health
Experience in labor and delivery units, maternity wards, or community health centers preferred
Some positions accept newly certified midwives with supervised clinical practice
